The Luxembourg delegation competed this weekend, April 25–26, 2026, in Kaunas, Lithuania, as part of the Junior European Cup. A high-level competition that confirms the growing potential of the national junior team.
The main highlight came from Micha Welter (JC Stroossen), who claimed a bronze medal in the –100 kg category. In his first appearance at this weight, he delivered a very encouraging performance by stepping onto the podium.
In the same category, Matteo Da Cruz (JC Stroossen) secured a solid 7th place.
The day before, Leni Welter (–70 kg, JC Stroossen) and Kevin Nunes Dos Santos (–73 kg, Judo & Jiu-Jitsu Club Differdange) were unable to place, despite showing commitment in line with expectations at this level of competition.
National U21 and Senior coach Jasper Huitsing still takes away many positives:
“We currently have a junior team with enormous potential. Several athletes have already achieved good results, and all of them are capable of winning matches at this level. I am very proud of this team and convinced that this is only the beginning. Finishing this European Cup in Kaunas with a bronze medal for Micha Welter, in his first participation at –100 kg, is a great feeling.”
Micha Welter also shared his thoughts after his performance:
“First competition in –100 kg, weighing in at 94 kg. I felt in shape and sharp throughout the day, and it paid off in the end. I’m grateful for the support here in Kaunas and back home. I’m already looking forward to the next one.”
Following the competition, the judokas are taking part in a training camp organized on site before returning to Luxembourg, scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
