Safe Fall – Safe Schools, for the First Time in Luxembourg

On Friday, November 29, the LASEP (League of Sports Associations for Primary Education), LUNEX University, and FLJudo completed the first part of the “Safe Fall – Safe Schools” study at the fundamental school of Sandweiler in Luxembourg. This innovative project examines how children react to involuntary falls.

This study, supported by the European Judo Union (EJU), was designed in 2016 by researchers and judokas from the University of Seville:

  • Dr. Oscar del Castillo-Andres
  • Dr. Maria del Carmen Campos-Mesa

The idea to implement this study in Luxembourg arose in February 2023 during the “Ukemi at school” seminar in Eastbourne. After a lengthy preparation period, “Safe Fall – Safe Schools” launched at the end of November 2024 in Luxembourg.

During this first phase, 22 students from cycle C4 (10-11 years old) and 17 students from cycle C3 (8-9 years old) enrolled in LASEP activities were evaluated for their reactions to falls.

Starting in January 2025, a 12-week training program will begin, offering children 10 minutes per week to learn how to fall safely. At the end of this program, new tests will be conducted to measure their progress and the acquisition of safe reflexes.

This dynamic initiative combines safety, education, and fun for a better future for our children.
